My Holiday

Talofa welcome back to my blog , today i am going to be talking about my holiday .

On saturday me and my cousins had a fun day out . First we went to inflatable world , it was really fun but it was also hot . After that we went to the new pools in Linwood called Te Pou Toetoe . After swimming we went to go fish and chips and went to the park to play . That was the probably only fun thing i did in the holidays .

Thank you for reading my blog , see you nest time .

Hokey Pokey

Aim : To make hokey pokey using Sugar , Golden Syrup and baking soda .

When the sugar and golden syrup combine with the baking soda it froths and makes carbon dioxide gas . That is why the hokey pokey has bubbles .

Materials :

  1. 2 tablespoons of golden syrup
  2. 4 table spoons sugar
  3. 1 Heaped teaspoon of baking soda
  4. Pot
  5. Tablespoon , Tea spoon
  6. Bunsen burner
  7. Grease proof paper
Method :

Put 4 tablespoons of sugar and 2 tablespoons of golden syrup in a sauce pan and melt
Bring to the boil and simmer gently for 5 mins
Add baking soda and stir vigorously
Put the hokey pokey on a piece of grease proof paper to cool

The more sugar syrup is cooked the browner it becomes . If it is left cooking for to long your hokey pokey becomes burnt .

Explanation :

Why do we stir ? So the sugar doesn't burn
Explain why the hokey pokey rises ? cause you added the baking soda

Lockdown 2021

Lockdown 2021

  • Government confirmed the Covid-19 variant infecting people in the North Shore was closely matched to Covid found in a recent returnee from Sydney in managed isolation.

  • “Now we can be fairly certain how and when the virus came into the country,Ardern said.        ↓↓

  • That person arrived on August 7 – meaning it was unlikely the disease had been spreading for weeks, as was earlier feared.

  • Five community vaccination centres in Auckland are closed today because staff have been diverted to help at Covid-19 testing centres.

Manurewa, Ōtara, Westgate, and Tamaki  are open for vaccination.

The closed centres are Birkenhead, Highbrook, Pukekohe and Takanini. Almost all general practices remain open.

  • “Based on timelines, there are minimal missing links between this returnee and the cases in our current outbreak, and the period in which cases were in the community is relatively short.”

Yet the high number of locations visited by the community cases, and the infectiousness of the Delta strain, mean New Zealand is not out of the woods.

To Do!

  1. Highlight (in yellow), the suffixes in all the underlined words above.

  2. One of the underlined words also has a prefix. Which word is that? Unlikely

  3. Remembering that a compound word is made up of 2 (sometimes more) base words (e.g. grandfather; into) find 5 compound words in the text above

i)     Highbrook                                  ii)    Birkenhead                     iii) Timeline

 iv)        Outbreak                             v) Westgate

5.  Highlight (in blue) capital/uppercase letters that begin proper nouns in the text (e.g. Auckland). Do not highlight capital/uppercase letters that begin sentences/statements/questions.

6. Highlight (in red) a quote from the Prime Minister (clue: you will spot speech/quotation marks).

7. Based on the reporting about Covid, find your own words and write 5 sentences about how this lockdown has been for you.

This Lockdown has been really tough because I'm stuck at home and I can’t go anywhere. Also it's really sad for those people who have covid and are dying from it . I have mixed emotions , so half of me is happy we are on lockdown but then half of me is not because I won't be able to see my friends or family . The weird thing is that we have to go on a zoom call with our class but it feels different because we normally don't do this and it just gives me mixed emotions .

Folk Tale

This week I read a folk tale story called The Empty Pot. A folk tale is a story that has been told for generations and has a moral or a lesson in it.

The Empty Pot story is about telling the truth and being honest. Ping was in a contest to win to be the Emperor. The Emperor gave the kids a cooked seed but they cheated and brought a plant, except Ping. Ping had tried growing his plant for so long he didn't have a plant to show the Emperor. Ping told the Emperor that his seed wasn't growing and then the Emperor told all the kids that he actually cooked the seeds, just to see if the kids would be honest because they needed an honest Emperor.  He became the Emperor because he was honest and truthful. Then at the end the boy came the Emperor.

What is Fermentation ?
The chemical breakdown of a substance by bacteria , yeasts , or other microorganisms .

What effect does sugar have on yeast?
Too little sugar in dough can slow down yeast activity: Yeast is a lot like us – it loves to eat sugar. Yeast needs sugar to produce carbon dioxide – the leavening gas that causes the dough to rise.

What are 3 foods that have yeast?
Breads, muffins, croissants, biscuits, and other baked goods usually contain yeast.

Bundaberg Diet Ginger Beer 4x375ml Bottles - Brews Newmarket    Yeast is Still in Short Supply, Even for Professional Bakers - Perishable News

Today we made Ginger Beer . We did this by activating the yeast first by adding sugar to the yeast , putting some ginger and warm water in a cup together . Once we had done this we put it to the side and left it to ferment while we made the rest of the ginger beer. We made the ginger beer in an ice-cream container by adding first the sugar , then the water , some lemon juice and lastly the ginger beer bug. Once everything was mixed up we put it in a bottle. It is going to take about 6 days to turn into ginger beer. Mr Palmer is going to keep it in his office for the next week .

Chilli Tasting Experiment

Aim: To see which si the best way to cool down the hot chillie taste in your mouth when eating chilli.

Hypothesis: I think by using ......... I will be able to remove the hot chilli taste from my mouth .

Equipment

1. Milk

2. Water

3. Coca-cola

4. Tasting cup

5. Chilli

Method :

1.  you will work in groups of three for this experiment . Each person in the group will use of the drinks with chilli. You will then swap results in your group so that everyone has the same results .

2. Each member of the group needs to have their own tasting up. This will be used for putting the different liquids in as we cool off the chilli in our mouths .

3. Place a piece of chilli in your mouth .,

4. you will drink the liquid that you have in your cup. As you do this you will complete a results chart.

The milk will not work immediatly . After 3 minutes it had a small effect

And milk could be a solution when eating spicy foods — literally. That's because milk helps your mouth handle capsaicin, an oily chemical compound in chili peppers. Capsaicin binds to a receptor in the tongue and creates a burning sensation.Casein protein found in milk can also bind to the capsaicin and wash it away.

What is the scovile scale ?

The Scoville scale is a measurement of the pungency of chili peppers, as recorded in Scoville Heat Units,

How does a scoville scale work ?

Scoville heat units, also known as SHU is simply a measurement of the number of times capsaicin needs to be diluted by sugar-water. The number of Scoville Heat Units (SHU) in a pepper or even hot sauce indicates the amount of capsaicin present. The higher the Scoville rating, the hotter the pepper
